Assistant Professor Biophysics
The Department of Physics at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, with a research focus in Biophysics. Biophysics is a research emphasis within the College of Sciences and Mathematics through a partnership between the departments of Biological
Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Physics (http://www.auburn.edu/cosam/clusters/biophysics/).
The successful candidate is expected to establish an extramurally funded biophysics program while building collaborative relationships with the physics faculty, the biophysics cluster, and across the university. Applications from single-molecule biophysics researchers are desired. Research subspecialties within biophysics that are of interest include (but are not restricted to) nanoscale approaches to biology, single-molecule force spectroscopy, super-resolution microscopy, macromolecular machines and assemblies, mechanobiology, and medical related applications. Post-doctoral research experience is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) demonstrate strong leadership potential in the area of biophysics, (2) play an active role in expanding and growing the biophysics research group in the department of physics, (3) supervise undergraduate, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers in biophysics, and (4) provide excellent instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level in the physics curriculum.
Requirements:
A Ph.D. in physics, or equivalent degree in biophysics, chemistry or a closely related field at the time the appointment begins and a record of scholarly accomplishments is required. The candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States on the date the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. The candidate must possess excellent written and interpersonal communications skills.
Auburn University, COSAM, and the Physics Department offer a collegial and collaborative professional environment. A primary goal for COSAM and the Physics Department is the development of an inclusive environment by strengthening the diversity among our faculty, staff, and student body. Active areas of research within the department include biophysics, atomic molecular and optical physics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, space physics, and physics education. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from groups that have been historically underrepresented in physics.
Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. The desired starting date is August 16, 2023.
