Overview
The Department of Mathematics is looking for an energetic, self-starter responsible for communication outreach, including web and print editing and content creation, conference and special event administration, and diversity and inclusion initiatives. The communications specialist will work closely with department faculty and staff on these goals, and will be encouraged to suggest new ideas and solutions to improve these aspects of the department.
Responsibilities
Web content editor:
Primary person responsible for adding/editing content on the department's public Drupal-based website. This will include posting news items, events, and other information. Additionally, the communications specialist will work with faculty and student organizers to create webpages for conference and other events. A working knowledge of Drupal or a similar CMS, or other web development experience, will be useful.
Communication outreach:
Edit the department's annual newsletter, including soliciting content ideas from faculty and students, writing articles and sourcing external content. Design posters for department events and design/edit other departmental publications/reports.
Additionally, development and management of social media engagement including implementation of a strategic social media plan, guidelines, content calendar, and oversight of metrics, analytics, and assessment to promote faculty research, math initiatives and events, student and alumni achievements, etc.
Events administration:
Main liaison with faculty event organizers for conferences, workshops, and other special events. Event planning will involve working with faculty to create a budget and request funding, finding and booking event space, publicity, arranging AV and other support, and working with the department's event coordinator on catering and other logistical needs. Many department events are partially supported by sponsored-research funding, and the communications specialist will help ensure compliance with university and sponsor expense policies.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion outreach:
Work with the department's climate and inclusion committee to organize the Horizons Lecture series and provide additional administrative support to the committee. Engage with other University departments and outside organizations to develop and suggest plans for additional departmental outreach and other ways to foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of experience
Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
Ability to set/adhere to key project deadlines
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and work both independently and as a team member with minimal supervision
A collegial, positive attitude, along with a proactive, collaborative working style
Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and content management systems (e.g., Drupal)
Preferred qualifications:
Strategic communications, digital marketing, social media, and/or project management experience.
